pointless quaver moaning - 13.10.2010

20.11.2006 - 1:21 p.m.

There are some things i really miss living in this green and pleasant land that i'm sure would be an improvement if only everyone else grew up and started behaving themselves in the proper manner becoming of an Englishman.

Shooting clubs - there used to be a pistol club near where we lived in vertical, and this was ok, then i wore green for a bit and shot full bore on big ranges which was much more satisfying, and if i'd realised that i was borderline myopic at the time and got some glasses my scores would've been higher, but like a proctologist, i was only in it for the crack, so the scoring wasn't important. My dreams are the places i go to, to get the things i don't have access to, and recently i've been shooting alot. This varies between standard competition paper targets, people and 'others' (random pieces of landscape and objects not in the previous categories) with a variety of firearms and results, and it's a pretty satisfying (if ultimately unrewarding) way to spend a night.

Being able to buy herb openly - holland may be a dangerous place, being 20 feet below sea level, but thanks to having a sensible and adult attitude to life in general they live mostly happy lives. I'm happy to pay tax on herb, i don't even mind registering as a user if it means i'm not hassled by the law and can get good quality at a reasonable price, but no, nanny state says we can't possibly allow this sort of moral decline, tobacco and alcohol are legal, is that not enough for you, you greedy outcast ? if we allowed green to be sold, our youths would go off the rails and society would collapse in a haze of giggling,The Man says no, and criminalisation follows, as it turns out i'm happy living as a criminal, my criminal ways keep me nicely sedated against the nanny state and make everything, well, a little rose-tinted.

Sue me will you? I'll sue your ass back to the stone age - I blame the americans for this, and it's definately their fault (as a collective nation state rather than specific people) if you trip on a paving slab that's broken, you pick yourself up and watch where you're going next time, if you fall and break something, you go to hospital for free treatment, the fact remains that you tripped because you weren't paying attention, it's not the councils fault for not replacing the slab the instant it breaks, it's yours for being clumsy. The lure of 'free' money and no-win-no-fee bastard legals hangs over us like a big inflatable devil, 'go on' they say 'claim from the council, it's their fault anyway, just think what you could do with the money...' and selfishness looms like the monster from the black lagoon 'well, we could do with the holiday' or 'a new suite would be nice in the front room' This proves that lawyers are evil, promoting self-interest over the common good, the 'what's in it for me ?' attitude. These people are then the first to moan when their council tax goes up because local government are paying out settlements left, right and centre.

Trash television - once the studios in the uk realised that there was a whole segment of US television they could re-create cheaply, that involves bringing on people who should be sterilised before they work out how to reproduce and getting them to air all their problems in front of a Circus Maximus type audience the cast was set and now it'll never leave us. The maxim in broadcasting seems to be

'find the lowest common denominator and pander to them, or if possible include them in the proceedings, that way you're sure to get everyone above them as well, a ratings winner !'

There used to be a time when reality television involved finding a person with no imagination or practical abilities and fixing their garden for them. Then came the monster that was Big Brother and we reached the top of the slide, perched on the precipice. Then the cult of 'shalabrity' took over and the reasoning goes

'people love celebrities + people love to see other people fail + there's a lot of past it, ex-celebrities who will do anything to get back in the limelight again, even if only to be laughed and sniped at in the tabloids for being a sad, washed up old tosser = an hour a night of prime time + filling up one of the sub-channels with 'Reality Live, see it as it doesn't happen'

now we have (sic) celebs on ice, horses, dancefloors, in jungles, running tracks, roaming the streets and confined to quarters, they're losing weight together and fighting each other, if you've got a concept we can find the celebs to fill it and they'll do it too.

Have you no shame ?

Obviously not

so now, apart from quiz programmes which have to feature real people because celebs are rarely intelligent enough, or do not want to demonstrate their intelligence lest the target audience think them elitest and snobby which could affect their popularity and thus their ratings, all reality television has to include 'celebs' it's the law if it wants to survive past the pilot.

If you dumb down enough, no-one feels left out, now that's real inclusionist thinking, or 'something for everyone'

What do you do if you don't want to dumb down ? if I wanted to 'opt-out' of petty laws and meaningless social conventions because i'm better than that, what do i do, and where do i go ? are there clubs for misfits like me, can we sit in a circle and discuss our feelings ? what if we want to break away from the UK and form our own nation state, maybe we could do a deal with cornwall, take on cornish nationalities and settle there, far from the seat of bland stupidity in westminster ?

the trouble is, we don't have the vehemence of Islam and we don't have the social mass of the lowest denominator and we don't have the power of the goverment, who are busy trying to please the people who keep them in power (not, incidently, the mass voting population) we're sidelined and marginalised and a bit fed up, everyone is making laws for the last three groups mentioned and none of them really help us, we're too English to protest and too aware of the consequences to riot and laws that benefit us would be abused by the self-serving scum of the country and ruin it for everyone.

any suggestions ?
