Millenial children (i prefer this over the 'generation Y' because that just sounds like they're copying, choose something original for christs sake) i've identified the following, vaguely generalised but definitely identifiable traits particular to the age group, in no particular order they arrive as,

- apparantly the world owes them a living (this has also been noticed by employers, who when interviewing millenials for jobs frequently get asked what the company can do for them, i think you've got that wrong snowflake, go away and think about your boxfresh and precarious position in the workforce)

- television has had a far greater effect on them than it did for us. I'm convinced this extra exposure also contributes to their inability to concentrate on or prioritise tasks. Myself and next eldest sibling were frequently seen turning off the television because 'there's nothing on', well there was only three (and then four a bit later) channels to choose from and apart from cartoons after school until 6pm that was about it.

- you've got to stay ahead of the consumption curve or you're a loser. If it's not new then it's old and if it's old i can't be bothered to play with it, longevity is just a word they can't spell. An example from chez Sven was J's boy, he got a Wii, played with it for a bit, it lost it's appeal (partly due to his idiot father) "can i sell it to buy a PS3 ?" the answer was no. Were the Wii allowed in our house it would no doubt now be collecting dust under his bed along with the Gamecube.

On the subject of shiny new things, the boss of Sony while speaking at some event identified Sony as the 'industry leader' in the never ending console battle, however he did clarify the statement with the following,

"This is not meant in terms of numbers (sold), or who's got the biggest install base, or who's selling most (units) in any particular week or month"

Ah, i see, so in what way are you describing your hateful company as the 'industry leader' ? I believe that they are superior in their hatred for the consumer who buys their product, i've had enough experience with sony products to know that they will either,

- Break while in the warranty period, but the warranty somehow won't cover the specifics of the breakage, so we'll have to charge you before you get you item back

- Cause untold heartache, as the software for that sleek sony phone you've bought gradually takes over your computer rendering it dead and full of sony spyware

[update] - apparently i'm not alone in thinking this, The Onion has posted this video which pretty much sums Sony up.

Luckily my old PS2 has been soldiering on for years, and will have to continue for many years to come, 'cos i'm not buying a wii until they're very cheap second hand and the same applies to a PS3, i like being years and years behind the technology curve because when i finally decide i want something it's damn cheap.

Now that the USofA has a boss who isn't a retarded, oil-lovin', lobbyists wank-dream, and isn't pandering to protestant fundamentalists it appears that science may take a front seat over crappy ideology for the first time in 8 years. Unfortunately our wanna-be goverment is still lagging far behind and so they still believe that political truths actually count as real truths, the government has a 'chief scientist' who's job it is to be all rational and logical and provide counter-point to rampant political ideas which are rarely (if ever) rooted in the real world, science has very little in common with political ideology, and when you are appointed by politicians to your position of political adviser i suppose you're in rather a difficult position.

Quell surprise

So homeopathy has a higher standing than the scientific output of actual scientists doing proper research, i think we've seen enough. I know a tool when i see one, i've just looked him up and he's got a decent resume especially in the field of environmental research, and he's got a proper environmental scientists beard, but it seems that he's a bit short on vertebrae, making him the perfect choice for the position, long on excellence, short on morals.

The way this country is set up we'll never get a strong person as prime minister as the whole system is self-serving to maintain the status quo of power and control, only those who subscribe to this will be allowed to stand as a candidate, so we'll never have a choice to elect for change. There was a news story a few weeks back where everytime it came on the words democracy were bandied about, how lucky we are to live in a democracy, in this democratic nation fairness is the only way, through the process of democracy etc etc

I think a more accurate term for the government in this country is Oligarchy, we've just had so much wool pulled over our eyes for so long we can't tell the difference any more, and it would take more people than are available to effect change and there's also an equal and more connected network of people in who's interest it is that the current situation remains. In the event of a stalemate the best course of action for the enlightened is to find somewhere else better to live, or do something to upset the entire system and weather the ramifications that follow.

I know where the wall is and who's going up against it, but as a population we're being continually conditioned to be more selfish than the previous generation, so there'll never be enough people available to make the change, thus the grand plan remains in place and nothing changes.

Status quo remains
