02.11.2009 - 3:06 p.m.

I'm now revelling in my lack of responsibility, yesterday was homework day for J, and the boy was also doing his, i spent most of my waking hours slumped in the sofa playing San Andreas, in fact i played it so much i'd developed a case of 'players thumb' in my left hand by the evening and had no strength at all to hold stuff, Sonyitis, natures way of telling you to get a hobby that doesn't involve little thumb-sticks.

With the playstation off limits that only left spinning tunes amongst my housebound hobbies, so i've dug out some nutty fast trance to mix into a cd of psychedelia, best served at high velocity in a darkened room with lasers and lights, or in a car hammering down the motorway at high velocities, either way you'll want to go as fast as the music.

Ask any sensible person about the ID v Evolution debarcle going on at the moment and they'll tell you that dogma and science don't mix, it is possible to be christian and a scientist, but don't even try to be a Christian Scientist because your life will be full of unresolved incongruities and the sound for Richard Dawkins laughing at you and there's a good reason you've never met a Baptist Scientist.

At this point i should make clear that science can't be hijacked to prove woolly claims about how god is great, and everything is designed, that is not science, that is just stealing sentences to try and prove a point, if you have read at length any meaningless drivel from Ray Comfort or his ilk then i suggest you leave this blog immediately and go straight to WorldNutDaily, you'll be happier there, and so will I

Anyway, you can't use science to prove or backup dogma, because dogma generally exists outside of rational science, so that's nice and neat then. Naturally politicians don't worry too much about science unless it can be twisted to back up some weak piece of policy that needs a 'shot-in-the-arm', and in the fluffy world of the politician it doesn't matter what you say as long as you get a favourable result in opinion polls.

A problem then exists when you need science to back up dogma, generally governments employ scientists as advisors because they are experienced in their respective fields of study, but if you need science to back up policy that is not grounded in science then you have a quandry, because the science will almost certainly come out contrary to the policy.

So Professor of Psychopharmacology (i love that word) Dr Nutt has been sacked, seconds before he resigned i'd imagine. For anyone not in the UK he was sacked because he said that some drugs currently banned and associated with heavy jail time are less harmful than booze and fags, the government twisted this to say he was lobbying against the current policy of prohibition and fired him. Not really a surprise outcome, Dr Nutt used a logical process of scientific rationalisation and statistical analysis to determine that cannabis, MDMA and LSD are less physically harmful than tobacco and alcohol, our current premier, the sad faced unelected sack of scotshit says that cannabis is lethal, which is why they not only have it banned (for YOUR safety) but keep trying to move it up the danger scale, who would you believe ?

Over the rest of this week, the rest of the advisors in this field of policy will also be leaving in ones and twos, faced with the unavoidable truth that government only wants scientists who will rubber stamp policy decisions, they've no option. This situation was a regular fixture during the reign of Dumb 'ol Georgey W Bush, and the GOP are doing their level best to ensure that legacy continues by labelling scientists as commie elitists hell bent on destroying everything that is good and american.

What governments really want is a coven comprised of astrologers, palm readers and unicorn whisperers to bring truths from the far side to back up whatever crazy soundbite has just been hurfed into the media ear-horn, science has such an inconsiderate way of trying to tell the truth as it is, and everyone knows there's no space for truth in politics.

Coming up - the new Morlok committee on climate change have recommended bashing stuff with sticks, what does it mean and how does it affect you ? more on this after the weather with Chantel...
